After about 2 months of training, today was my first 5k. I ran the Star 6 Memorial 5k at Nimbus Flats. It wasn't until this morning that I realized what this run was about. Several years ago the Sheriff's Dept helicpoter, Star 6, crashed at Lake Natoma killing 2 of the officers on board. I remember this crash, I remember that day and I remember that my dad was called to the crash site. Having been raised as part of the Sacramento Sheriff's Dept family, this was a tragedy that definitely hit home. I didn't realize that this was the purpose of today's run when I registered. When I realized it today, I immediately understood that this was no accident or coincidence. I was supposed to run this race today, it was supposed to be my first 5k. I am proud to have been a part of this event.
I trained and ran with my friend and neighbor Heather and we had two goals today - to run the whole time and to finish in under 40 minutes. We finished in approx 38 minutes (yay!) and I got to approx 2.25 miles before I had to stop running and walk. That last half mile was a killer! It was hot and there were hills, not a fan of either!!
On to the next one... the ultimate goal is to complete a half marathon this year. And while during the runs I question the sanity in that goal, it is still my goal!
